Sierra Leone’s Chief Minister David Moinina Sengeh has revealed that a total of 80,000 public servants are on Government Payroll.
He made this disclosure on social media Saturday evening while engaging citizens on critical national development issues.
He went on to say that about 80,000 teachers countrywide are actively in classroom, while about 37,000 of them are on government payroll. This means the remainders are either private, volunteer, or community teachers.
Alpha Sesay, a graduate with honour’s degree in Economics from the Fourah Bay College (FBC) said the unemployment rate is nothing to write home about, a reason he advised members of the public to engage in skill works as a remedy.
Government is currently the biggest employer amid employment crisis as foreign direct investment appears to have reached a plateau.
Statistics Sierra Leone recently released a preliminary report on the Census of Business Establishments conducted late last year and early this year. As per the report, 165,514 business establishments are currently operating in Sierra Leone, out of which 48,299 were regular business establishments, and 117,215 were informal micro establishments.
A government insider said conscious efforts are being made to diversify the country’s economy, streamline growth, and set a blueprint for a better future.
