Receiving Sierra Queens at the newly built National Stadium Practising Field on Saturday after their historic gold feat won at the just concluded WAFU A Women’s Cup 2025 in Mauritania, NSA Boss Dr. Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai said the national grace will motivate President Bio to continue investing in sports.
At the welcome treat, Dr. Abdulai said he could not describe the joy the young ladies have brought to him.
He traced the champion title to the consistency of the Sierra Leone Female Premier League, which Government has solely sponsored in the last three years.”It is from this league players were nurtured to put on exemplary performance at the WAFU Tournament,” he said, thanking SLFA for footing the bill of the Sierra Queen outing, whose glory is rooted in Government domestic support.
He went on to disclose that in 2024, Government disbursed Two Point Eight Billion Old Leones to finance the Sierra Leone Female Premier League. “This year, we have given Three Billion Old Leones to boost this very women’s league. The idea is to create employment. Clubs will use the seed money to pay salaries. And this will keep our women busy in meaningful things outside the need to engage in prostitution and the likes,” he added.
On the enviable spate of women’s performance in cross-border tournaments, Dr. Abdulai said they need to pay attention to the opposite gender, citing President Bio’s unprecedented investment in sports.
“With this victory, no one can question what sport can bring back. This is the return for money,” he told the gathering.
Chairing the welcome ceremony, SLFA’s Head of Media and Marketing Ibrahim Kamara said they can never succeed without government support. “And it is true that this support has been coming endlessly,” he said.
Speaker after speaker pointed out the significance of the WAFU feat, borrowing a leaf from Dr. Abdulai with respect to the urgent need to turn to women in sport.
