The University of Sierra Leone has released three different convocation dates for its constituent colleges amid job scarcity.
College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS) and School of Postgraduate studies is poised to stage theirs on the 17th December 2024, to be followed by the Institute of Public Administration Management (IPAM) on the 18th. The host institution Fourah Bay College (FBC) will have theirs on the 19th at the Amphitheatre on Mount Aureol.
In April 2023, a total of 3,400 students graduated from the University of Sierra Leone. The hope of many landing their dream jobs remains bleak as unemployment soars.
Experts say the number of job seekers is by far higher than that of the job creators. This has made the job market highly competitive.
Mary Bangura, a graduate from FBC, told this medium that she has been unemployed since graduating some years ago. “To avoid sitting down idly, I resolved to take up a security job to take care of myself, my siblings, and my sick mom,” she said.
Despite knowing her discepline to her fingertips, Bangura said she has had all her applications turned down.
It is still unclear the number of students expected to graduate this December.
