The main opposition political party All Peoples Congress (APC) has in a press release called the pronouncement of the creation of two new districts as “undemocratic and illegal move”.

It maintained that the proposed districts are made without any proper national consultation, statutory basis or reliable census data.

The APC accused the Bio-led government of manipulating the country’s governance structure for partisan gain. It added that they will not sit by and allow the government to distort “our national administrative and electoral system through illegal and premature actions cloaked as development.”

While the party believes that the creation of new districts or cities must be a data-driven process, it cited the unpreparedness of the Government to conduct the census that could have given them an advantage.

“Any attempt to implement administrative reforms such as the creation of districts or cities before the completion of a credible census will be fiercely resisted” the release stated.

The party further stated that they will be calling members of the public to peacefully demonstrate against the creation of the two districts which they said is dangerous.

It made a clarion call to national and international development partners to closely monitor the situation.

It called on the Minister of Local Government and Community Affairs, Hon. Tamba Lamina, to make an immediate retraction of the statement.
